Dear Friends,
A short story about Father Eugene, sent in by Tony Vieira:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Tony Vieira
Date: Tue Mar 4 19:20:14 2003
Ladislao,
Talking about father Eugene, one day I fell down in the pole vault pit and broke my wrist, I always smile when I see the new air filled landing pads the current athletes use for pole vaulting, our pole vault pit was sawdust and as hard as concrete, both bones just above the wrist were broken [confirmed later by X-ray and a cast which I had to endure for 6 weeks] so Scruts sent me up to the dorm, it was Saturday so no nurse, when I got to the dorm, I was met with the astonishing sight of Eugene doing pull ups on the first cubicle next to his room in his shorts. That night after I told the boys about it, Edward Lloyd, Steve, Maline Smith and Cow Spray [anyone remember cow spray's real name?] mobilised the boys who waited until Eugene was about to make his last round, and they started doing pull ups on their cubicles, forcing a clearly embarrassed Eugene to flee and seek refuge in his room.
As far as the colour of the cubicle was concerned, I was never invited to choose the colour of MY cubicle, and if the place was still functional I would sue. Does anyone else remember picking the colour of their cubicle? As I recall, all were painted this really sick cream colour. The cubicle next to mine was occupied by the French boy Piton, does anyone remember him? My job was to help him with his English since he did not speak one word of the language, Piton had one wrangler Jeans which he wore everyday for the entire term, and he did not have to hang up those jeans, it stood up by itself when he took it off.
My cubicle was close to the toilet, it was on the side of the dorm which faced the mountain, from my cubicle, on most nights the toilet looked like it was on fire, and there was that much smoke coming out of it. The amount of cigarettes we threw in the toilets at the Mount killed all the bacteria in the septic tanks and caused an environmental hazard. The poetic justice of it all was that it was that we who caused that incredible stench in the first place, were forced to breathe it in day and night.
Tony Vieira
P.S. Ladislao, I have spoken to the men here about the airport matter, our international flights are all controlled by US based companies and there are few if any Guyanese pilots who would benefit from such an exercise. I am still looking into it.
I bought a P4 computer and in the process of transferring all of the data to the new computer from the old hard drive the idiot technician erased all of my e-mails, so please send me the link to your site again, I had to wait for you to email me with the new circular before I could tell you about it since I have lost all emails and addresses.
I have decided to run in the 2006 Presidential elections, I announced it last week check www.tonyvguy.com commentary UF, I have taken over the United Force Political party and even if I don't get the presidency [I don't think I can anyway] I will, with the other small parties control the parliament and hold the balance of power in the country.

Hi Ladislao,
Please pass this on to all the guys who left around 1960 and 1961.
My brother Geoffrey was in class with you, the Galts, David Pampellone, Michael Herrera, Manuel Prada, Louis Lacour, Bernard Johnson, Chris Knowles, Matias de Fedak, Wayne Vincent Brown, Roger Henderson, etc.
My class had Pablo Figuera, Roberto Savignon, Robert Elias, Tilson Tang, Peter Gibson, Christian Goddard (at one time), Richard Farah, Stuart Monplaisir, and many others.
Have you heard from all of these people? What news of the Figueras and of the Savignons?
I am now resettled back in Trinidad after 37 years in Europe, America, Middle East, India, and a few other places, running the Private Banking Division of RBTT Financial Holdings, the biggest banking group in the Caribbean.
It's really a great life here relating to my roots which no-one overseas could really understand and I was blessed to get this job - helped with references from some of the names I have mentioned. The Old Boys Network really does work!!
I have met some of the guys back here but not had a chance to go up the hill yet. Do you know if Voosh still has some of the many photos he took while we were there? I am thinking of going up with a laptop and a scanner to capture some of these from him. What do you think?
Best wishes
Jon Golding
PS What is Louis Lacour's email address?

Las,
I didn't think of sending you the names of the guys in the pictures on the "Scouting" article, but here they are, to the best of my memory. Please forgive me if I get some wrong, or if I've forgotten the names of some of the boys. It's been a long time . . . . . . .
Photo 1. Fr. Cuthbert is distributing Holy Communion to Joe Azar, Gerard Gioanetti and Bro. Vincent.
Photo 2. Manuel Prada is sitting astride of a camp bench fixing a stove that was giving him hell. I can still remember the incident.
Photo 3. Norman Smith and Roger Ames (Woodpecker Patrol)
Photo 4. Joe Azar and his Patrol, including: Dennis Gurley, Stuart Henderson, Bernard D'Abadie, Joe Azar, Wayne O'Connor and ohmigosh, how could I forget. (Forgive me)
Photo 5. Jeff Gransaull, ---x?---, ---x?---, ? Koon How (I think), ---x?---, and ---- de Verteuil.
Maybe this will help?
Regards,
Nigel
P.S. I have some more MSB pictures and will send them in time.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you Nigel, your photos are really good and I hope that those in the photos, confirm their names after having received your article and having looked at the photos. “old”boys perk up, there were other scouts?, at least I remember having seen them with my eyes, from 1955 to 1960. Can you supply some new photos and articles?.
Here in Venezuela there are a couple of them that I remember working for their badges, wearing uniforms, blowing trumpets!, with a lot of enthusiasm, but that was long ago.

The photo: A rocket that was built during my last year at the Mount.
The story: The igniter, a small pivotable old JETEX motor filled with cotton and alcohol, which was pulled with a thread from a safe distance so that it moved underneath of the rocket motor, where it ignited a fuse and the fuel that was prepared behind the sports house using Potassium Chlorate and sugar mixed in a cup over an open flame fire, Fr. Benedict, had he known at the moment, would have been proud of us. Dangerous operation as two occasions the mixture caught fire and the hot vapours did slight damage to our hands!!!. In both occasions that it happened, ones my hands and in the other, the hands of ? (maybe someone can tell me) it was Saturday and no one wanted to go to the infirmary because of the Saturday night movies.
Did it fly??, we set the rocket on the hill on the North side of the football field on the top edge of the cliff, well it is difficult to say as it started up with a lot of smoke and suddenly Fr. Bernard appeared from no where at the road on the first bent out of the sports field very close to where we were and asked if we were lighting fire. I took the rocket and threw it from the mountain side to the football field where it sputtered. Next I ran up to Fr. Bernard to tell him something which finally satisfied him and continued up the monastery road. We ran down to rescue the rocket, the smoke subsided and all that was left was a melted aluminium cylinder. The conclusion was that there was no enough pressure in the propulsion chamber. If there would have been one!!! Who knows the results?
Through the years I have seen a movie on TV, The Rocketers, a bunch of West Virginia high school student, doing the same thing. They were persistent, rocket after rocket; ours was a one try event.
God Bless
Ladislao

Circular No 71

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I. Caracas, 15 of March 2003. "Ildes of March" Circular No. 71
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Some time back I asked Nigel Boos to write on scouting, here is his report.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
SCOUTING AT ABBEY SCHOOL

Maybe it’s because we grew up in the post WWII era, a time when uniformed
soldiers were on every movie screen and were great role-models for us young uns.
Maybe it’s because we loved to parade in our khakis, black and gold scarf toggled
at the neck, badges there to show as proof of achievement. Or maybe we all simply
enjoyed the challenge and the fun associated with scouting. But for sure,
Scouting at the Abbey School was an unique experience.

I believe it is true to say that we had more Queen Scouts than perhaps any other
Scout Troop in the island. But what else would one expect than a fantastic
record, with a Scout Master like Fr. Ildefonse in charge, a mighty man among men,
followed after his resignation by the friendly, humble and caring Fr. Cuthbert,
who had to learn everything about scouting from “scratch”, as the Canadians say.

Sunday morning band practice was something to which we looked forward, bringing
with it, as it did, noise, music (of a type), discipline, and great efforts by
our band to maintain a high quality of martial tempo. The trumpeters, who in my
day included John Golding, Juan Marini, Pablo Figuera, Dennis Gurley, and others,
led by Manuel Prada, set a wonderful, piercing tune, against the rat-tat-tat-tat,
rat-tat-tat-tat, ah-rat, ah-rat, ah-rat-tat-tat-tat beating of the side drums,
played by (fill in the blanks, fellas, I can’t even remember the names), and
backed by the Big Base Drum which was my job. (Wasn’t Stephen Clark my
understudy? I know he was involved, but exactly in which capacity eludes me now.)
Frankly, I had the easiest job, as all I had to do was to hit the thing hard and
keep time with everyone else. We marched around the School a few times, much to
the annoyance of the volleyballers who had to pause in their game as we ducked
under the net, and it was a blessed relief to everyone when, finally, we set off
down the hill and along the roadway to entertain / annoy the rest of Trinidad and
the monks of MSB. It was always a highlight of the parade when Mike Howard was
invited to step out in front of the band, with his silver baton (a thing with a
heavy wooden ball at the top end). Tall as he was, Mike led the parade from the
front and inspired us with his wonderful, fancy marching style and handling of
his baton.

Camping with the 1st Mount St. Benedict Scout Troop was an experience never to be
forgotten. Fr. Ildefonse would choose his camping ground, after much consultation
with the Scout Commissioner, local landowners, and I suppose, our Troop Leader,
Gerard Pampellone, and plans would be made. Each Patrol Leader (mine was
“Woodpeckers”) was responsible for ensuring that an adequate number of pots,
pans, skillets, mugs, plates, cutlery, tents, poles, pegs, mallets, shovels,
ropes, semaphore flags, etc. were packed into our “Patrol Boxes” and readied for
departure. On the big day, we’d board the bus and accompanying cars in our
uniforms and head out for a few days of glorious adventure.

On site, the routine began, with unloading, unpacking, distributing, checking,
choosing Patrol sites, pitching tents, cutting bamboo, building trestle tables,
making gadgets, cooking, inspections, hiking, mealtimes, camp-fires, games and of
course, sleeping. Each day began with a “Wake-Up” call, followed in short order
by Holy Mass, from the back of Fr. Ildefonse’s / Fr. Cuthbert’s Volkswagen van.
The back of the van was set up as an altar, and (these were pre-Vatican II days,
so the priest had his back to us, facing into the van) we stood around
respectfully as the holy sacrifice was offered, in Latin.

We camped at a number of memorable sites all over Trinidad and Tobago, and I
vividly recall one camp in Tobago, in 1961. I think, when Mr. Bishop invited us
to come to Tobago as guests of the Tobago Scout Association. The land chosen for
us was a concave basin, and we were positioned at the very base of the basin. Mr.
Bishop brought over the largest “grass-cutter” I’d ever seen (which he probably
used to cut the bush between his coconut trees), a huge apparatus pulled behind
his tractor. In no time at all, the area was cleared and we began to set up camp,
pitching tents randomly around the inside of the basin. We cooked supper and were
preparing for bed when the heavens opened up. Rain fell bucket a drop for the
entire night and the water rose inch by inch inside of the tents. Everything was
soaked, in fact, everything was underwater, and we were cold and miserable. An
SOS call was sent out, presumably by Fr. Cuthbert, and in the middle of the
night, cars began to arrive to extricate us from the bog which our campsite had
become. We were taken to a local school-house and offered accommodation in a few
of the classrooms, which thankfully were dry. We slept blissfully into the
morning, all semblance of order having temporarily disappeared. But not for
long.. . . . . . . as soon as we had woken up and cooked breakfast, back we went
to the campsite to salvage everything, travelling back and forth in Mr. Bishop’s
tractor-trailer unit to a new campsite chosen for us, a lovely spot right on the
water’s edge, with a beautiful view of sea and sand as only those who know and
love Tobago can understand. A very memorable camp indeed.

And so the years have flown. We graduated from Abbey School and moved on with our
lives. Some of us went on to Form 6 at St. Mary’s, others attended Canadian,
American, British and Venezuelan Universities, among others, and settled down,
some with families, others not, but all retaining somewhere, in the backs of
their minds, distant, lingering memories of those happy days of our youth, when
we were ready to take on the world.

Ladislao Kertesz has been asking for someone to write something about Scouting at
Mount, for the benefit of us all, and I have tried to fulfil his request. I knew
that somewhere among my albums I still had a small collection of photographs
which I had taken with my box camera and I’ve dug them up. Hopefully, some of you
guys will recognize yourselves. Hopefully, these pictures will remind you of
where we’ve been together. Perhaps some of you may feel inspired to write about
your own memories of MSB and the Abbey School.

At any rate, here they are, for your enjoyment. I recognize a number of the guys
from these photos, but perhaps not everyone, so help me out, if you will:

Best regards,

Nigel

A recent news from Nigel

Laz,

Please pass this on:

Bernard Stone (MSB alumnus of approx 1951) has had a heart attack 5 days ago in
Calgary. He has had open-heart surgery and is slowly returning to health.
He is still in hospital in Calgary and has asked for prayers for his recovery.
His first request on opening his eyes, after the operation, was for Holy
Communion.
(Or, so I was told.)

Nigel

Hope that by now Bernard Stone is recuperating satisfactorily, please write him,

Circular No 70

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 8 of March 2003. Circular No. 70
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

From: CJakobszen@aol.com
Date: Sun, 22 Dec 2002 14:08:01 EST

Hello Ladislao,
First of all thanks a lot for having sent me various "Mount" circulars. I've enjoyed reading everyone of them and now I would like to participate more actively in the MSB circular mailing.
If you wish I can also send you in the near future a short rundown of my activities since I left Mount(1957) and since I left Caracas (1975). (I am eagerly awaiting your rundowns. Ed.) I have had, of course, contact to various Mount boys during all these years, and as I had been flying over regularly to Caracas till the year 2000 (when my mother died) I've had the luck to be able to meet personally many of my old and closest friends as Urbano de Fedak, Azier Atela , Isaias Farcheg, Ricardo Figuera, Roberto Lipavsky, Pedro Castro etc. Now that I haven't been travelling to Venezuela for a couple of years, this new communication method is in a way an excellent substitute to keep in touch with the old gang.
Besides that, now I'll have more time available for personal pleasures of this kind, first of all because my children have now become independent (my daughter Christine, 25 got married in June and my oldest son Gabor, 31 has set up his own company in Budapest and my youngest son Peter, 29 graduated from the University of Heidelberg.
Secondly, I'll be retiring at the end of May 2003 and right after we'll be moving to Spain, (next to Valencia) where we had bought an apartment some years ago.
I am closely following with anxiety the daily happenings of Venezuela and am very worried about what the future will bring. Over here it's no cake walk either but nothing comparable to what you're having over there.
I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year and please count on me for the future.
If you have any kind of "collective e-mail address list" of the Mount boys I'll be much obliged if you send it to me.
Un abrazo
Csaba
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I was very happy to have received Csaba´s email. I am enclosing the photo of his class 1958, so that he may place the names to the faces of his class. Believe it or not even MSB oldboys have a memory problem!!!!, but this is just momentary as once they see the photo their friends names come easy.

Some dozens of weeks ago I was told that there were more MOUNT INSIDE editions. I only have two! I am starting in this circular with the April 1964 issue. If someone can look up the memorabilia corner of his house, please send me a copy!
And to where credit is due, The Editor of this issue was kind enough to send it me, Don Mitchell.

We miss the regular email from Gabby, Anthony (Tony) Johnson, hope he is well and can keep up the good work with the WEB page.

We are also missing the Who is Where lines from Roger Henderson, I would like to include the latest whereabouts of some of the oldboys from TT and the world.

God Bless

Caracas, 1 of March 2003. Circular No. 69
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

A short note from a well remembered friend and teacher who is the Principal of Trinity College. I have been trying to send mail to the address but 90% of the time it bounces back because the box is full. So keep insisting if you want to contact him!!!!

From: Llewellyn Mac Intosh. trincoll@tstt.net.tt
Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2002 16:48:26 AST4

Hi, Let me introduce myself.

The name is Llewellyn Mac Intosh. I taught at the Abbey School from 1969 to 1984.

I have been receiving these Circulars ever since I met John Gioannetti the other day. I think that this is all a great idea. In fact, I was very surprised to see my photograph in a previous circular, about one month ago. It was very interesting, because standing right behind me in the photo was Colm Imbert who in now the Minister of Health in Trinidad & Tobago. (If some one would help in getting these circular to him, it would be a great idea). I am writing because I do recognise some of the guys in the current photo. Do not remember all of the names though. I am sure of the following:

No.7 Campbell. I do not remember his first name a bright and quiet guy. At one time he ran a tyre shop on Charlotte street, POS.
No. 11 Paschal Barath. He was quite a character!
No. 2 Glen Mc Coy. He also had a brother at Abbey. I met the brother, Hudson, a few months ago at Piarco. They were both very good musicians.

Sorry I do not remember any others.

How are things in Venezuela? I hope that you and your relatives are safe and okay.

Llewellyn Mac Intosh

Can anyone help with the class photo and the “kids” mentioned by Llewellyn???
I am sure they would appreciate it!!!.

And to answer his question about Venezuela, please click on www.orlandourdaneta.com, and go to a summary on our situation in ENGLISH/FRENCH/ITALIAN by Orlando Urdaneta, one of the opposition. You must have read diverse articles on our polemic situation so this one is one more and might help out in understanding the Venezuelan situation.

In my last circular, I mentioned Wayne Brown´s article on P.G. Wilson. Here are some additions to the WEB article that might give further the information to a possible biographer. It is about a visit to the U.S. in 1965 by P.G. to assist to workshop on coaching skills.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am glad to have received from Robert Huggins the following note.

Las,

I don't know if you know, but PG as he was fondly know, went on to complete his PhD in Sports training many years later. He then worked with the Government of Trinidad and Tobago as a Coach. (Also had a programme on TV, can anyone remember seeing it?) PG passed away some years ago at a ripe old age. (75) Can't remember how old, but some of the other past students might remember.
Robert.
--------------------
In this circular I am going to narrate my part in PG Wilson´s curriculum vitae.
At the bottom of the photo that I have included, the dedication was signed in 1965.
My graduation year from MSB, Form V, was in December 1960.
This personalized dedicated photo was given to me during my last year by PG in Washington D.C., where I attended and graduated at the Catholic University of America. He stayed a couple of days there before going to a scholarship somewhere in the US, I do not remember those details but I do remember the bottle of good Fernandes rum he gave me and the photo that I still keep.
At that time I was in the swimming team of the university, when I noticed that scholarships were given to foreign coaches with good records. I made a comment to my swimming coach on PG.

Again by fortune I had kept communications through post cards with PG after I left the Mount, so I asked PG for his curriculum, which by the way he sent in hand writing, next I had to rewrite it in my portable typing machine. I am sorry that I did not keep the memorabilia of his hand writing and letters.

He was accepted and I met him in a Hotel next to the University after he had arrived, he was very excited and I presume all went well.

From the above note he got the opportunity the he deserved and placed him in the position to continue to help others as he had done with us, thank God. I have still have fond remembrances of his person and coaching, since I was in track and field team at MSB, remembered mainly for throwing Discus and Javelin.

I lost contact with him after that, as I left the US in July 1965 for Venezuela and started to work in an area where communications was not the best, and all I remember is that someone told me later that he had a TV programme in Trinidad.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is sad but there has been only two lengthy articles, one on Fr. Benedict and the other on PG Wilson, none on Bro. Vincent!!. Need authors!!!!.

God Bless

Ladislao
