Circular No 86

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I. Caracas, 28 of June 2003. Circular No.86
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Here I am enclosing a rumor that has been with us for some time: A MSB reunion in TT.

At our redaction desk in Caracas, we have no information on the event but the following emails were received on the subject.

Can anyone from MSB confirm or deny the event, Fr. Cuthbert? Or the organizers help?

A question, the reunion that is being planned for August is still being planned or has been cancelled? I am making plans to be able to go but I need to know the date for sure to be able to put it in my calendar. As I have understood it is for August from the 15 to 17, is this true or how is the thing? Please if you have some information, send it to me.

Caracas, 28 of June 2003.

Dear Salvador,
How is life keeping you? Here I am answering your email that you sent some time ago.
I do not know for sure of any class reunion, but it is in the air, but nobody is willing to send an invitation. So I believe it is a reunion of old boys that do not have a computer at home or in their business!!! The invitations must have been and are sent and confirmed by telephone or personal contact.
Thank you for the information on Anthony Johnson. I have passed it on to Don so that he may lead the future of the WEB page.
How about the photos? Send me one at least to get back on track.
God Bless
Ladislao

Dear Ladislao,
In speaking with Joe Azar yesterday, he told me that he had heard from Fr. Cuthbert at MSB that there was to be an Old Boys Reunion at the Mount between August 14-15, 2003. I do not know anything about this, apart from this telephone notification, but you might want to check it out and alert everyone, if it is in fact happening.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Fr. Cuthbert,

I shall be visiting Trinidad between July 30th and August 13th for my niece's wedding and I hope to be able to see you while I'm there.
I hope you're keeping well, and getting holier by the hour.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Joe,

Thanks for the info.

Best regards to all,
Nigel Boos

Brian:
I've copied Vernon and some other Mount boys here. You may want to contact some of them before your trip. Perhaps they can give you a few leads and names of others you may want to visit during your trip.

Christian & Donald, first thanks for the good jokes and please keep them coming; since I need all the humor I can get to keep me going. The reason for this message is to request yr help with a few communication favors.
Please have Mom give you Sandra Goddard´s (De Lima) e-mail address; since I may be going to Trinidad at the end of the month and I may want to say hello to her family there (Vernon, Junior and their mother) if time permits and which hotels are available (Queens Park, etc). Is Hugh Henderson there and would Donald know!!??
My e-mail address: goddardbrian@hotmail.com
Thanks and all the best to all, los quiero mucho,
Brian
------------------------------------------------------------
Well that is all that I have, so those invited to the reunion, please tell us about it, is this a private party? I you what me to send out a general call, please give me the details.
-----------------------------------------------------------
QUIZ 3
I am enclosing a photo of a cross, where was it located?

According to the school building in construction the photo is from 1946. This would mean that the school building was not inhabited until 1948 or there abouts?? Can anyone remember?

God Bless

Ladislao

Circular No 85

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 21 of June 2003. Circular No. 85
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

The following resume and emails that was received from: Paul de la Bastide. We made 4 pages!

Ladislao,
I attended The Abbey School from 1958 through 1963 (or thereabouts) as a day scholar. The old memories remain: Lifting Mr Lionel Tyrell's old Morris 8 automobile and carrying it up the steps to the lower classroom landing hallway. (He never found out who did this but we all got flogged anyway).

Do you remember "Toots"? We used to spray ink on the back of his suit when he walked by in the isle of the classroom. I really felt sorry that we all did this. Poor fella. Then there was the freshman initiation as a new student started school, they had to be thrown into the bougainvillea hedge with all the thorns. ouch. That really hurt for days after. Smoking in the bathrooms and getting caught every time. Throwing the compass point at the blackboard while the teacher had his back turned. And the Dean of Discipline....I was in his office every day, it seemed I like getting my ass caned. (Amongst all of this, I managed to get an education somehow.)

I now live in the USA and would really like to get info from time to time, however you won't be able to fax me because it will be a long distance call for you. Is it anyway possible that you can e-mail stuff to: paul.delabastide@att.net ??

I used to hang out with the Costello's, Rostant's, Russell Cuhna, Gregory Farfan, Bruce Hutton, The Kirtons and de Pass boys, so that should clue you in to my era (now 53). I have been asking around for while now as to what ever happened to The Abbey School and all it's records. Do they have a web site that I can go to and do research on old student lists?

Let me know your response.
Please keep in touch
Paul

Ladislao,
The only name I recognize below is Jean de Meillac, as I did not finally graduate at MSB.
I transferred to St. Joseph's College at form III grade level. Had I stayed at MSB, I would have graduated in 1966 as it shows in the Roll Call, because those students you have listed were my class mates.

Paul

Ladislao,
How sad that you are no longer going to keep us updated with the newsletters.
Well done on the past job.
I hope that Gabby will be able to perform the updates but he indicated to me that there is not enough time in his life to do so.
I wish I had the ability to help but I don't understand all this techno stuff like you guys do.
If you are looking for Bruce Hutton's address here it is: rssl@carib-link.net,

Ladislao,
I am just curious: What is the little black dot in front of some of the names in Roll Call mean?
Also, I am seeing some names on the list that I have e-mail addresses should you wish to add them.
Let me know,
Paul de la Bastide

(Please forward the Newsletter to those oldboys that you feel that should be included in the list. Ladislao)

Each time you send a newsletter, you include as an attachment in Excel, a few names with email address's that some of them don't appear to be listed in the website ROLL CALL listing.
Does this mean you have a whole bunch of other names that are still to be added to Roll Call?

Hello folks,
For some reason this virus has raised it's ugly head again even though it has been around for a while because my AntiVirus software has recently intercepted about 2 or 3 bits of incoming email and there is no telling from where it has come. (Thank my lucky stars for good virus software. Phew!) You may want to scan your system just to make sure you don't have this little devil as it hides really well within your system.

The Norton site below explains everything and I think you can link to a part of their site where they can scan your computer for viruses.

Paul

Circular No 84

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 14 of June 2003. Circular No.84
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Here is an article that I found in the internet, please weight it, and comment.

October Water Shock

BACK in the Abbey School, one of the half-dozen or so secondary schools I went to and was expelled/suspended from, I had a Canadian partner named Mark Newcombe. Predictably - given that we were all aged 16 or 17 - in school, Mark Newcombe was called Stain Stalespunk; which is reason enough to remember him but he comes to mind - so to speak - now because of something he wrote for the school magazine.

Honesty forces me to admit the Abbey School magazine was barely deserving of the name. It comprised about four cyclo-styled legal-sized pages folded in half and stapled in approximately the middle; and they were so badly blurred that to attempt to read more than three lines without resting the eyes was to get a certain migraine headache and a possible brain tumour; not unlike this shiretrit, come to think of it.

The Abbey School magazine was edited by Llewellyn MacIntosh, the calypsonian Short Pants, if memory serves - though, of course, this could be yet another instance where it double-faults - and Mackie (as he was known before dropping his long name in favour of his short pants) had asked Mark to write a 500-word piece on a foreigner's impressions of Trinidad. I can't remember his other 480-odd words - this was 1975, mind, and a lot of rum-and-water has flowed under this bridge since that time. but, as long as we have weekends like the last one, I shall never forget Mark's first sentence: "the Government of Trinidad and Tobago has developed an admirable plan to remind its citizens of its past: its past without electricity or pipe-borne water."

BC Pires is as high as a pseudo kite. You can email your zwill to him at bc@skettel.com
--------------------------------------------------------
From the above, you can imagine him in the basketball court, running around with his friends just as we used to do, even if we were a couple of years apart. I have tried to contact him but no response, maybe the message got lost in the internet.

The rest of the article is about TT in the 2000s, so I have left it out, but of couse if he authorizes it I can include it as a column in the future!

I never went to Mt. St. Benedict's but got on to you mailing list because you wanted to get in touch with Stephen Tempro (I am his cousin). I do enjoy receiving your weekly update because I know many of the people on your list, Nigel Darwent, Nigel Boos, etc.

Unfortunately I have not seen Steve for many years (I now live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada), and although I try to visit T'dad at least once every 3 years, Steve moved to Barbados and I very seldom get there.

Dear Friends,
Art Knaggs my good friend and neighbor here in Halifax, Nova Scotia gave me a copy of # 71 yesterday. Nostalgic memories of 2nd Mt. St. Benedict scouting by Nigel.

Thought I could help with identifying faces in the photos.

2. Richard Anderson?
3. Maurice Bishop?
4. Joe Azar Jr.
5. Wayne O'Connor
6. Towsie Ferriera (Guyana)?

3. Johnny Abraham
4. Ronald Marchock

6. Richard Anderson
7. Richard deVerteuil.

Photo 3 - You've got it right.

I've a box - tucked away somewhere - with scouting photos ripped-off from the dark room. Caura camps, PTA basketball court displays, plays - Swan Lake; others I'd be delighted to share - probably 12 - 24 in all.

This is great stuff; put me on your mailing list and forward back issues if you can.
Regards,
Eion O'Connor (Rab)- Jan 61 to July 68.

Those that were Scouts please look up the photos in Circular No. 71 and check your friends!!!!

I am a little behind with the circulars so this is being sent today instead of last week, hope to get back on track by tomorrow!!! I am sure that with your help I can produce some more.

Circular No 83

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 7 of June 2003. Circular No. 83
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
I have tried to reconstruct the timetable for Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

The daily schedule was:
Wake up: 06:00
Morning Mass: 06:00 until 06:45 (until 1958 it was obligatory).
Breakfast: 07:00
Study: 08:00 in Form I classroom, which was above Prep A and B.
Class: 09:00 to 12:00, Four classes of 45 minutes.
Lunch: 12:30
Study: 13:30 to 14:00
Class: 14:00 to 15:00
Tea and clothes change for sports: 15:00 to 17:00
Bathe and change clothes: 17:00 time that the dormitory was opened.
Study: 18:00
Dinner: 19:00
Study for Form boys, Dormitory and sleep for Prep boys: 20:00
Sleep: 21:00

On Saturdays and Wednesdays:
The dormitory was opened after Lunch to change to sport clothes.
And on Wednesday there was study time after 18:00
On Saturday movies at 19:00

On Sunday the Mass was postponed one hour: 07:00
Breakfast at 08:00
Playtime till 10:00 when there was letter writing time and study.
Playtime from 11:00 till lunch.
After lunch the time table was the same as on Wednesday.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would like your comment on the time table, I presume that the schedule change through the years so I can vouch for years 1955 until 1960. So turn your clock back and give me your opinion!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gabby wrote in response to a sporting story:
That story was especially interesting to me because while I never knew I was inclined that way while at Mount. In the last 20 years I have become somewhat of a fanatic runner. I enter all the 5ks and 10ks around here and usually beat all the old farts in sight. I have done three marathons (one under 3 hours) and last year ran a mile in 5:24. I would like to think that my athlete son has inherited some of that from the old man.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have included for those academic old boys, a study manual that was quite a roadblock to some. It was for me, as I would have gotten 1st grade when adding up the points, but did not make it because of my English notes, which required a minimum grade, otherwise the total points did not matter, so I was downgraded. I have kept some of my old books as these proved to be great for reference with my kids. The books nowadays are very poor on themes and their organization is deficient.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have received good response on the Web page problem, and we have a group of oldboys looking into the matter.
As soon as there is a story, I shall include it in the circulars.

It is most interesting that those kids that one knew as aggressive, “rebel without a cause” type, and those that were “gang leaders”?? against the defacto rule in our times, are the quietest guys nowadays. And I mean quietest as to email writing, the old flame must have gone out I presume?
God Bless
