Circular No 77

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 26 of April 2003. Circular No. 77
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Who remembers the THE ABBEY SCHOOL BANK????

With so many banking oldboys, no one seams to remember, but from one that never used it, outside from a check or two, here is the story as I remember it. Was it ever audited? How were the balances kept? Did it have a capital?

School Bank:

I wonder if any of you has a copy of the check that was used at the The Abbey School Bank?? I doubt it!! But in case I am wrong, if any of you has a copy let me know!! Scan it!!! What colour was it?

Do you remember the procedure to cash the check??

All schoolboys were given a checkbook, coloured pink-brown, just like a normal everyday checkbook but smaller. It had a place to write the withdrawals and the place to fill out the amount and all the information, just like the checks we use everyday.

Maximum amount possible to withdraw was one dollar TT. I presume that this was to train us for our future entrance to the Banking world!!! ( Roger, can you remember?) The bank had a teller and transactions were made through a small window in the corridor of the Bursar's office. One person did the job of the president and all the authorities of the bank, he was Bro. Vincent.

He had a kid taking in the checks, which were checked for correct spelling and filled out according to the standards, then passed on to Bro.Vincent who looked up the kid's yellow Cardex and annotated the amount and paid out the sum. The pen that was used had green ink, and annotations were in the clear and beautiful handwriting of Bro. Vincent.

The Bank was opened on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at about 3:00 pm when we came out of the dormitories having changed our school clothes to sports attire.

The line was long, just as the lines that we encounter today at the Banks, and the kids in the line spent time reading the bulleting boards on the wall of the passage way. The bulletin boards had information on sports, usually a page of a magazine or a folded magazine was tacked behind a glass door.

Must of the kids read the bulletin board when in line at the Bank or when it was raining and there was nothing else to do, otherwise the bulletin boards were not even noticed.

In my particular case I tried to use the Bank twice, first and last time. I was not the patient type, so when I wrote 3.00 TT dollars instead of 1.00 TT dollars, the check bounced at the teller, so I asked to see Bro Vincent, who received me immediately to explain the rules of the Bank. Maximum 1.00 TT. I then explained the reason for the 3.00 TT in what I thought fair terms. I told him that the 3.00 TT was to cover a time period of a couple of weeks, so instead of lining up every other day for half an hour, I would do so once a week. I was told that any amount above 1.00 TT was only through written authorization of my parents. So the matter
was solved and I do not believe that I did line again in my five years at the Mount, as I was given money outside the normal routine. Any amount above 1.00 TT was paid by the Bursar, personally, so that the kids in the line did not notice the event, and did not ask for similar treatment.

I wonder if any of you has information on this Bank, I cannot remember when it was closed. All I remember that when Bro. Vincent left, around 1959-1960, correct me if I am wrong. We were told that the book keeping or the finances of the school were in disarray or in other words the control was not kept as it should have been??? Of course, this was the appreciation of the new Bursar, a layman. This may have been said because lots of us would remember that Bro.Vincent would give you money if he had any in his pocket when at the sports field and we needed some to buy a snow ice or what ever it was called and sold by Mr. Tomas.

Bro.Vincent had a sharp memory and would write these loans in the Cardex once back in the office. Saturday was the day when this would happen with more frequency as on returning from the field, we stopped to buy candy at the shop next to the Cemetery. I forget its name.

I still remember the candy that I bought, in my case peppermint, was the size of a golf ball, to take to the pictures, in the evening.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
How about the column? I shall send it out right a way to the editor of the Newsletter for inclusion in next week's edition.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear oldboys, I can safely say the most of us not only did go to the Mount but some did live those days. Luckily some of us have memories to share, to give the others a glimpse of what was happening during that time. I have even met some that have already forgotten the routines and are grateful to the writers. This is why I am keeping up this humble Circular, to provide a forum for those that want to participate. Be a doer, I am sure Fr. Bernard's legacy would demand it.

I am enclosing a photo of a good friend, can you recognize him?? Please send your answers to me and please include an anecdote if you remember any, to include with the photo. Quiz photo No. 2 150.

God bless

Ladislao

Dear Friends,

Our first exchange, most interesting, was in Spanish, so I have translated it for all our friends. I am sure Manuel does not mind.

From: Manuel Prada

Me conmovió ver a Fr.

Ladislao, sometime I spend a long time without opening my email, although I am glad to receive notes from all the oldboys, special joy to know of Roger Henderson, I do not know what has happened with Christian or with Hugh, the eldest brother, one day I shall write Roger, we were on the same team and he was an excellent player, very intelligent in football. Find out about Richard and Randal Galt? with Randal I went to Saint Benedict's College, Kansas, also with Anthony Johnson, this last one was from St. Lucia and in Mount he had various brothers. Last year, during Easter I was at Mount with my dear son Manuel to visit Fr. Cuthbert, I love him for all the patience, support, kindness, confidence with me just as Fr. Bernard had, may he rest in peace. I was moved to see Fr. Augustine nearly blind, I love him very much for having taught me the love for the letters, the lecture and French, in all there are lots of memories that I have this moment, thanks.

Ladislao, see you, I always visit Isaias, my friend and soul brother, and Urbano, my white brother, because he calls me his black brother, I saw him recently with Allum, Isaias and another oldboy, more your than mine, I lost his name, he was manager of General Electric.

Robert, great to hear from you!!!, of course I remember our Scout life. A few days ago wrote to Wayne in Jamaica and told him had it not been for: "On my honour I promise to do my best, etc," life would have been senseless in many aspects. Thank God we were Scouts; it marked my life, FORTIFIED ME and WIDENED my sense of duty and FRIENDSHIP despite my shortcomings.
Chris and Wayne Henderson, Roger a great all rounder, Richard and Randall Galt, Richard Farrah, Tony Johnson a great and kind friend, shit all of us Mount boys, remarkable set of guys, Michael Howard, in short, the list is endless, Terry Vieira, etc.

Donald, you are not at all right.
Sometimes some simply don't call me, and on Monday nights I usually have classes in the university where I teach or at least try to speak evil about this goddamned government, and please excuse the spelling mistakes, that is the real gist of the thing, moreover it is only recently that Ladislao has appeared on the scenery, asi que micaela , check your information, love you dearly,
Manuel.
Also remember that Isaias is my compadre and Urbano my white royal brother, real brothers!!!!!!

Dear Manuel,
I understand your annoyance but remember that the exchange that I have had with WVB was around MAY 2002 and the writing is about an exchange of emails from that time, together with Goddard's observations as to the literature used by WVB. So the problem must have been your not noticing the dates, Also remember that it has been only two months ago that we met after 42 years, so maybe circular No. 57 is only two months out of date???? All the circulars will be out of date as I keep a lot of material that is given to me by the constant interchange. You can help me to be on date, write ten lines about your teaching at MSB for the oldboys and I shall send it out in January.

I am glad that we finally are in contact and will stay so. Did you get my FW on Goddard's email??
God Bless

Ladislao, love you dearly, not at all mad, simply confused with the dates.

Anyway, this mot.rfuc.r, you know Chavez, really has a lot Venezuelans upset and perhaps that is the intensity and feeling in my language. Anyway ask my dear Wayne, if that is grammatically, linguistically or semantically correct, if not I really didn't learn a fuck at mount, I remember that for Venezuelans it was difficult to pronounce "fork" and some sons of bitches would have us ask brother Swaa or whoever it was, "brother give me fuck please", shit, it is such a long time, love you and Merry Xmas.

To each and every one of the old mount boys. We were a great and special bunch, will meet again when we reincarnate, I do
believe in that.

Dear Friends,

Here a couple of lines from Don Mitchell, with whom I have been in contact since the 1960´s thru mail, e-mail, but not eye ball. But I hope that this personal meeting is going to be soon.

Dear Don,
Thank you for your effort to get Anthony Lucky´s article ready. Please, I would like you to write in the future on the spoken language that Gordon and you spoke to confuse us. I believed you told me that it was a transposition of syllables????
God Bless

Hello Ladislao,
You asked about the language that Gordon and I spoke at Mount to confuse those that did not know the method. The period was the late 1950s-early 1960s. The "language" that we used was widely spoken among school boys in England at the time. Gordon and I read about it in boy's books that were available in the school library at the time. The language was called Pig-Latin. The way it worked was like this: You took the first letter of each word and placed it at the end of the word. Then you added the letter "a". So, if you wanted to say, "Hello, how are you?" You said, "elloha, owha reaa ouya?" With a little practice, you could do it as fast as you could speak normal English. So that, you could appear to carry on a conversation in Pig Latin at the same rate as others were speaking normal English. It was a simple enough trick to do with ease if you gave it a little practice, and it gave us much amusement while it lasted.

Hello Ladislao,

The latest circular received loud and clear!
I am about to give up on my hope that Anthony Lucky will get a secretary in his office to send me a proper photograph that can be attached to his biography, as he sent it to me. Would you like me to send you the incomplete article on Anthony, sans photo? Or, I could access one of the Trinidadian sites and select a photo of Anthony that you could attach quite easily. There are plenty of those.
Don
PS. Anthony, this is supposed to make you leap in to action.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Ladislao,
I think WVB is one of the most evocative and compelling users of the English language that I have ever read. I have no idea where he publishes normally, but hope that he keeps sending you items to attach to your circulars.
All the best,

Don
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry to inform you Don, that Wayne has promised to send his column but none have been received since January, I believe. I used to take the articles from the Jamaican Observer as they were posted in the Search section, but because of difficulties in what seemed to be my choosing his material, I made an agreement with him. I would not take the material from the Newspaper but would wait for him to send it to me, this way he would get the articles that he wanted published, in the order and content that he chose. Ed.

Here is additional information taken from last year´s circular:

Here is the sad story taken from a clipping in the Trinidad Express given to me by Gordon Mitchell. Those living in Trinidad must have read the news, but I know that those living overseas would like to know.

A Short note by Gordon Mitchell:

Hi, Ladislao,
I thought this would be of interest to the rest of the ex school mates.
Gordon

A Short note by Don Mitchell:

Hi, Gordon
Thanks for the clippings. Now, if only I had 2 million to spare!!"

Dear Friends,

Here are some miscellaneous conversation with the O´Connors.

Subject: Happy Christmas

Thanks for all the Mount News during the year. Keep up the good work.
Leary says that everyone in his year must be too old as there's no news of that era.
He does not help by not sending something but maybe in the New Year.

Subject: The early years

Thanks for your email.
Yes, I know Arthur well and spent some time with him and his family in Darmouth a few years ago (before we were both grandparents). Although we have his residential address, we do not have an up-to-date email address (av_knaggs@hotmail.com ) for him so would be grateful if you will send this to us if you have it.

My records indicate that I was at Mount from May 45 to December 53. I was the youngest boy in the school when I got there but there was only one class. From your note Arthur says he was there from 44 to 49 but my brother Richard and I were there before Arthur hit the scene so either my Mount records are wrong or Arthur's dates are wrong. There was no way that Arthur (Scroongie) could have sneaked into the school without us noticing! I will sort out the dates when I contact Arthur. Phase 2 of someone's letter on your circulars describes the refectory scene of those early years but the writer's name was not attached and I must have missed part 1.

Richard and I were there before the Priory became an Abbey and before the construction of the College and Church and the school consisted of about 13 boys which gradually increased over time. Fr Indefonse started the Second Mount St Benedict Scout Troop. Athur was the Patrol Leader from the early days. That era holds many great memories for me. Many years later, Father Leo started the Third Mt St Benedict Air Scouts but I think that was towards the end of my time there and I was not involved.

I completed my School Certificate in December of 51 and stayed two more years to do Higher Certificate so finally left Mount in Dec 53. I went to work in the Oilfields and stayed in this industry throughout my working life both in Trinidad and in Australia. I married in 1959, had 5 children, emigrated to Australia in 1967 and now have 15 Aussi grandchildren. I retired in 1994 and have been busier than ever since.

Our last visit to Mount was in Jan 1999 and was fortunate to meet with Fr Indefonse who was then wheelchair bound. He did not recognize my name when told that I was there to visit him but as soon as he saw me he called me by my nickname, PeeWee. He died not too long after this. I enjoy reading all the comments from other past students. Keep up the good work. Hope Christmas goes well for and your present civil unrest will sort itself out soon. All the best for the New Year. God bless and a Happy Christmas to you and your
family.

Regards,
Leary O'Connor

Subject: The early years

Just received your circular with the May letter I wrote to you, needless to say Richard and Leary do not seem to have progressed very much further with the names. For many years Arthur Knaggs used to write a newsletter for the Old Boys and it was always interesting with various annecdotes. He lives in Canada and his address is 2 Dubonnet Drive, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia B2X 2V3, phone no. (902) 435.0909. We used to have his email but recently the mail comes back so I'll not put that. Maybe someone might know his email address and he would probably be a fount of information for you.

The school and dormitory were built around 1944 while I was at school there. During the war the US commander of Wallerfield base had three sons called Tom, Dick and Harry who went to Mt. St. Benedict until the end of the war. The pictures of the new college building (at that time) were taken by the father in a small prop plane as one could not get normal level pictures because of the slopes and buildings being at the top of the hill. Many years later (around 1955/6) I worked in Venezuela and I was in Caracas having a drink in a bar and sat next to a guy who said he had been to Mt. St. Benedict and he was an American, so I asked him if he was Tom, Dick or Harry and he replied that he was Harry and that he was flying an executive jet for one of the oil companies.

That's all for now.
Richard
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the above you can have a notion on the date the school opened and when the school was built. Only with e-mails like these we can enrich the archives that the Circulars may become for some future historian??? So please do not be stingy with your writing and collaborate so that other might enjoy your experience at Mount.

The mentioned Part 1 and Part 2 of a Circular were written by me. These I write because there seems to be very little in the way of articles and memory on the daily routines. These are taken for granted by many as we moved by the clock, some even as zombies.

I am sorry that our in-house literate, Wayne Vincent Brown, has not sent any more of his articles. I hope he is well and preparing a Scouting story or something on his Mount experiences.

For a look at our world's impressive night sight, get into this page,

Thank you Michael Azar.
