Circular No 99

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I. Caracas, 27 of September 2003. Circular No.99
----------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Those in Trinidad must have read a lot about one of our oldboys, and his daughters. I have asked Don Mitchell to get material so that I can include it in
one of my Circulars.
Here is the result of the inquiry.

Subject: Anthony Lucky

Hi Tony,
You are probably planning to update the Mount site sometime soon with new material. This is a photo attached of Anthony Lucky and family for the "Recent
Photos" page, and below is a note for the "Biography" page when you are next putting up stuff.
All the best,
Don
-----------------------------------------------------------
Directly from the hand writing of Justice Anthony Lucky.

I presently serve as a Justice of the Court of Appeal of Trinidad & Tobago.
After I left Mount, I completed my secondary education at Presentation College in San Fernando.
I then left for England where I graduated as a barrister-at-law from Gray's Inn in London in November 1961.
After a stint in private practice, I served as a Magistrate in San Fernando between 1964 and 1974 and as Secretary to the Law Reform Commission between 1974
and 1976.
Between 1976 and 1987 I was in-house counsel for Royal Bank of Trinidad & Tobago, after which I was appointed to the bench as a Judge of the High Court.
In October 2000 I was appointed to our Court of Appeal, Trinidad and Tobago's highest Court other than the Privy Council in London.
While engaged in these duties, I continued my legal education, picking up over the years, a Certificate in Legislative Drafting, a Diploma in International
Relations, and a Masters in International Relations.
For my MSc degree I specialised on the law of the sea, and my thesis on the Legal Relationship of the Law of the Sea between Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela is
on the reading list in some of the subjects at UWI.
I have been married to Cintra for 39 years. Cintra is a graduate teacher in Trinidad, holding a BA (General Hons) degree and a Diploma in Education from the
Faculty of Education at the University of the West Indies. We have four daughters, Cindy-Ann, a specialist medical doctor in Canada; Gillian an
attorney-at-law and Member of Parliament in Trinidad; Elizabeth whose degree is in Industrial Management and Accountancy and who lives in Canada; and Antonia who
is an environmental management consultant in Trinidad.
Besides my work, I enjoy attending international law conferences and spending extended periods of time in Canada doting on my grandchildren.

Hello Ladislao,
Here I am back in Antigua. The trip to Trinidad is not past, and I must get back to work. But, I would like to send you some of the photographs I took.
My computer broke down, and is being repaired. I am borrowing Maggie's at the present. I have downloaded the photos to it, and will attach them one by one to
email messages that I shall send to you.
I am very bad with names, so please excuse the lack of information. The old boys of the 1985 class who organised the function treated us all very hospitably.
I thoroughly enjoyed the event, and hope that more of us will make it next year. They have promised to make it an annual event.
The monks and Ms Markus attended the Friday event. I attach several photos of them. It was so nostalgic to see them again. Only Fr Abbot was able to make it to
the Sunday lunch in the Maraval Valley.
The photos of the men and women in formal dress were taken at the dinner on the Friday night. The ones of us dressed less formally were taken on the Sunday at the home of Mr
Hardip-Singh, where we enjoyed viewing the wide array of wild animals surrounding the house.
Very few of the old boys from our generation were present. You will recognise the ones who are in the photos.
All the best,
Don

(Would Mr. Hardip-Singh be an oldboy??? If so someone has his email address??? Ed.)

Hello Ladislao,
I have just sent you a total of 19 photos from the Reunion in Trinidad. They went to the address you requested photos to be sent to. There is a short message
attached to the first one.
Some of the photos are not of the best quality. Please feel free to circulate only those that you are satisfied with.
There are more photos. These are just a cross-section of them. I chose some of the "old" boys, and some of the "new" boys to satisfy all ages!
All the best,
Don

(The photos are OK and if there are more, please send them, I believe that only 15 faces are showing between your´s and Salvador´s photos, I am sure there were
more people at the EVENT! Ed.)

Subject: Re: Circular No.98, The Abbey School MSB

Dear Ladislao--
In your latest MSB newsletter (reprinted, I gather, from a letter from you to David Bratt), you write:
"In the case of WVB he was upset because he though that I was discriminating by not sending out his anti American ones. I told him that it was not true; it was
because I could not get it from the newspaper every week so he is sending them to me for inclusion."
Since you have thus circularised the MSB Old Boys, I hope you will likewise pass on to them my response to yours above, as follows:
1) In the period under discussion--circa August-December 2002--my column was dealing with the impending US attack upon Iraq on an average of once every three
weeks or so. You were reproducing my columns, to which I retain copyright (without my permission, although, to begin with, I had no objection), through
most of that period--yet not one of my "anti-American ones" appeared. If that was a coincidence of the unavailability online of those particular columns, it was a
most striking coincidence.
2) I explicitly disavow your view that my columns attacking the Bush Administration's imperial surge into the Middle East (which, you may have
noticed, is now getting the comeuppance it so richly deserves, though Iraq itself will have been shattered and destroyed by the time the American legions are
withdrawn from it) constitute "anti-American(ism)". American voices opposing the war have existed all along; today, fully half of those polled in the US are
calling Mr Bush's Iraq adventure a mistake; and indeed there's a good chance that he and his bunch of barbarian raiders (raiders of the US Treasury, no less than
of Middle Eastern oil, by the way) will be ejected from office by the American people next year because of it. I doubt you would be minded to call the American
people "anti-American". For the record, I am no more that than they are.

WB.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately I missed the comments when I prepared the Circular, David. As I said about a year ago, I do not censure the Newsletter, but sometimes I try to
avoid confrontation to a minimum, knowing the stance of each writer. Ups, I screwed up!!!!
Dear Wayne, At first I thought that you sent me an article of your Scouting days or intervention during the fight between the Farcheg and Fedak brothers!!!
I am sorry my comments have brought up the controversy, but true to modern journalism, I have printed your answer to Circular No.98 and I hope that the
matter is settled. I shall be more careful next time!!!!.

God Bless

Thanks for your email. A splendid idea to keep contact with former co-students by means of weekly exchanges.
I do remember your name and that you belonged to the "gang from Venezuela". I would be happy to get your publication occasionally, so as to refresh me memory
about those happy days with you and the other guys, on that mountain top in Trinidad, so many years ago!
My address, as you have it, is correct, email included. Let me know your own ordinary address as well, for I am not able to reach you regularly unless by

Dear Ladislao,
Thanks for sending me your address.
To answer your question: Yes, I can receive email, like the one you used to contact me, which is the email address for this house; Berchmanianum.
No problem, as for receiving goes, and I look forward to receive your newsletters on this way.
I spoke with Father Paul on the phone. He was your teacher mathematics and physics, left the Abbey in 1963, and is now 87 years old.
He, too, remembers you, although vaguely, and sends you his kind regards. He does not have an email and is not in good health at all.
Both of us have had no access to the computer world, and for me, at the age of 82, and being almost blind, it will remain so.
This message reaches you through the kindness of one of my cousins in Holland, for the use the house email is not open to us, except for receiving messages.
I ask you please to keep using the Berchmanianum@wxs.nl email address.
All the best and God bless,

Father Francis.

Ladislao,
I have no problem with anything that you have sent or will send.
I do not think you should delete anything from your files. I delete because I am depending on you to save everything! I think you should set up an archive which
should be accessible to any one who wants information on MSB.
It's a wonderful idea you have for a historian to use what you are collecting for a book on Mount.
All the best,

Dear David,
Yes I agree that not all articles are to our liking or we adhere but I have made it a policy that I cannot censure the articles, only modify them by cutting parts
of it is they tend to be a personal attack or something like that. Should I delete the article from file?.
In the case of WVB he was upset because he though that I was discriminating by not sending out his anti American ones. I told him that it was not true; it was
because I could not get it from the newspaper every week so he is sending them to me for inclusion. So what can I do?.
If the article has been in the public domain then it must have some merit.
I keep a file on all pertinent material for future sending out or to keep information that might help a historian for a book on MSB, which I hope someone
would write.
I need help from kids like you to balance the contents of the circular and make it interesting. I know that there is going to be an end to these in the
foreseeable future because of the lack of stories and photos; I keep a few for me to write in case things go slow.
God Bless.

Hello Ladislao,
With all the notices prior to the big reunion of old Mount boys I thought some of the poor Venezuelans would make it to TT and take in some sun & fun in the Caribbean. I thought I read Donald Goddard threatening to show up ??
As for me I would have liked to show up just to see how the old place and some of my classmates look after all these years (I finished in the "middle ages" in 1962). I don't remember most of my classmates, except for those from Venezuela: Chabita (Gerhard Most ), Iwaskiewicz, Mickiewicz. I know I kept the list of my classmates, but to find it is another matter.
I managed to pass through Piarco airport many times in the 60´s and 70´s on my way to Grenada. I can understand how David Bratt feels about the place. Back then it was only slightly better than Grenada's. With the current situation in the country I can only keep on working where I can, usually in these God forsaken oil patches of Venezuela. No chance for retirement, or a cushy job in a university with lots of time off.!!
Greetings to all those old Mount boys out there.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The old memories remain:
Lifting Mr Lionel Tyrell's old Morris 8 automobile and carrying it up the steps to the lower classroom landing hallway. (He never found out who did this but we all got flogged anyway)
Do you remember "Toots"? We used to spray ink on the back of his suit when he walked by in the isle of the classroom.
I really felt sorry that we all did this. Poor fella.
Then there was the freshman initiation as a new student started school, they had to be thrown into the bougainvillea hedge with all the thorns. ouch. That really hurt for days after.
Smoking in the bathrooms and getting caught every time.
Throwing the compass point at the blackboard while the teacher had his back turned.
And the Dean of Discipline....I was in his office every day it seemed like getting my ass caned.
(Amongst all of this, I managed to get an education somehow.)
I now live in the USA and would really like to get info from time to time., however you won't be able to fax me because it will be a long distance call for you.
Is it anyway possible that you can e-mail stuff to: paul.delabastide@att.net ??
I used to hang out with the Costello's, Rostant's, Russell Cuhna, Gregory Farfan, Bruce Hutton, The Kirtons and de Pass boys, so that should clue you in to my era (now 53).
I have been asking around for while now as to what ever happened to The Abbey School and all its records. Do they have a web site that I can go to and do research on old student lists?
Let me know your response.
Please keep in touch

Paul
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If any one of you remember those mentioned by Paul de la Bastide, (Does anyone know where Mr. Lionel Tyrell is?) (Also the first name of the Kirtons, Costellos, Rostants,) (We have not been luck with Russell Cuhna) Please give us their whereabouts or FW this to them so that they may be included in the mailing list.

Circular No 96

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 6 of September 2003. Circular No. 96
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

I have the following on the spot information on the Event, Fr. Christopher has been kind enough to have sent the following report. This time the oldest e mail is in first.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: "the-mount" <the-mount@carib-link.net>
Date: 16 Aug 12:11 (PDT)

Dear Ladislao,
As you know the 1st Reunion and Dinner of the old Abbey Boys Association took place yesterday, 15th August 2003, at the Centre of Excellence. About 100 hundred people attended, including about 8 monks and some of the former teaching staff, among whom most prominent Miss Kitty Marcus (88). It was a most enjoyable evening. Several of those present commended the work you have been doing in sending out Newsletters. Some of us, including myself, feel your work and tireless efforts are not being appreciated enough. Thus this little note of encouragement. Keep it up.
Even if we do not respond as often as we should, many, I can assure you, do enjoy your regular newsletters, even the abbot who you took to task in your last one. By the way this same last one was inadvertently deleted from this computer before I had a chance to print it. Kindly mail it to us again.
Many thanks, very best wishes and hope to meet you in the living flesh at the 2nd Reunion (or before).
God bless.
Fr. Christopher
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Caracas, 29 of August 2003.

Dear Fr. Christopher,
Thank you for the email and the lines on the event.
Please my apology to Fr. Abbot. My worry from the first place was that there would be not enough publicity for the EVENT.
I had sent Miguel Gonzalez, the Circulars since I received his email address in March. First I thought it was a hoax, and after I sent out Circular No. 87 I got a reply, too late to make a decent publicity to the Circulars readers. With No. 91 I did get a lot of replies.
I always thought that there must have been interaction with the priests of the Mount, but no answer from there, so this was my complaint. This is the first email from MSB, after 93 Circulars, so you might gauge my worry.
Well, the important part is that the EVENT was successful and there is a hope for 2nd EVENT. God Willing.
Please ask Fr, Cuthbert for Fr.Francis and Fr. Paul´s address at their retirement home in Holland.
Also I ask you to have the circular passed to Fr. Benedict, Fr. Augustine, Fr. Cuthbert and all the others that have made these Circulars possible, thanks to have been part of MSB and the Abbey School.
Please inform me if you are needing old Circulars, and send me the number of the one that was deleted, so that it can be replaced.
Can you send me the name of the oldboys that you did recognize at the EVENT. Also the 8 priests that assisted, there were brothers also??
God Bless

Fr. Odo van der Heijdt;
Br. Gerard (Rupert) Alexis;

I was surprised to hear that no one from the Mount ever send you anything. It must be some years now since you started to send out your circulars. I myself have only been at Abbey School for short periods and I know very few of the boys. I was there from 65 to 66 and again for some months in 1970.
Michael De Verteuil, now Msgr, and rector of the Regional Seminary, was there at that time. Unfortunately he never knew about the reunion until I spoke to him about it the morning of the same day (15 Aug.). He would have loved to go, but was unable to at that late point. The only one present at the Reunion who I know very well was Michael D'Ornellas and his wife, also Joe Berment and Robert O'Connell. I'd have to see the list of all present to remember other known ones.
Best wishes and God bless,
Fr. Christopher

(I have been sending the Circulars to Msgr. Michael de Verteuil, to the following addresses: Xtian@cablenett.net, since 2001 when he was editor of Catholic News. Maybe if I have had an actualized address he would have been informed. Ed.)

Dear Ladislao,
I was reading the list of priests from the Mount. I sent the correct list to you since last Saturday. Did you receive it. I notice your e-mail address has a slight change from time to time, sometimes it's a 1, then again a 2, and now a 4. What's the difference? Please let me know if you got my e-mails.
Please note: Fr. Augustine and Br. Joseph did not attend the Reunion. Abbot Francis Alleyne and Fr. Christopher Theunissen did.
Miss Kitty Marcus is mentioned under priests from the Mount. She has not yet been ordained to the sacred priesthood, and it's not like to happen in the near future, certainly not under Pope John Paul II, and because of constraints of age and health.
Yours sincerely,
Fr. Christopher
