Keep up the good work! Your circulars find a lot of interest at the Abbey, especially among some of the older monks.
The Abbey School is an integral part of our history and I encourage you to continue seeking out the people and the stories that made it happen.
Yours truly,
Abbot John (fifth Abbot of Mount St Benedict)

Hi Laszlo,
Thank you for your reply. I attended MSB back in the year 1948 when I was a seminarian at St. John Vianney. The main reason was to catch up on my Latin for in those days that was the language of the church. Most of my schooling was done in Guyana where I graduated from high school. During my time at the Mount some of my classmates were Osmond Gomes (since
dec'd), Fr Vincent Compton, Bernard Gomes, Cecil DaSilva. Just to name a few. A lot of my contempories I have lost touch with for obvious reasons. There is a Latin phrase that describes it adequately, i.e. Tempus Fugit. However, there are memories of the school that will live on forever and I thank God for them, and the many good priests that laboured to make us the men we are today.
I am retired after may years as a lawyer in my own practice and still find time to volunteer in ministry during the winter in the Caribbean. Thank God for that!
So much for me and my escapades.
God bless you and your family. Keep up the good work you are doing!
Ian

Dear David
There is no movement either physical or communicational from those that in the past expressed willingness to go. Farcheg, Fedak, Prada, etc. I am not going as I have Nicola from TT, here as a guest of Victoria. And the short time notice, not of the dates but of the events. I have not sent out the Circular waiting for detailed news on the event. But shortly I shall send out last week’s and as soon as you give me a run down of the events and photos, this Saturday’s circular.
Have fun and get me the list of those assisting and their email address if it is possible.
God bless

Could you please e-mail me circulars 1 thru 60 (exclude 36 and 44 and 59). Also 69, 72, 73, 80, 81, 82, 83, 89 and 90. The last one I got was 91. I came in late on your e-mail list and would very much like to catch-up. Especially since I will be going to Trinidad for the reunion. Will you be there? I know I promised you a lot of pictures. I have finally scanned and titled them.
Will start sending them “manana”.

This is not a photo of the 1958 class. Csaba is not even in it. Check out the 1958 class on the web site. I believe you have the class of 1960 attached to this e-mail. I recognize Pablo Figuera (20) and I believe Timothy Hutton (20) and Anthony (Gabie) Johnson(23). The class of 1958 did not have that many students in it. My brother Maroth de Marothy was in it along with Urban Fedak.
I was in the class of 1959. We had just over a dozen students. Refer to the Abbey School web site which has it correctly.
I am still putting my photos and short history together.

(You can look up the photo in the WEB page www.theabbeyschool.com if you have any comments similar as the above by Chistopher, please let us know. Ed.)

Dear Ladislao,
Thanks for the circulars -- they are a pleasure...
About the class photo -- that's my brother's class -- Christopher de Marothy -- and he can help you more than I can on that photo...in fact, that might be his shoulder you see...he's quite tall.
I'll forward this email to him to see what he remembers...by the way, his email is cdemarothy@fdrinnovation.com
David Ames I'm in touch with...but he was in the 1957 class (mine was 1958)...his email is pvames@coastalnet.com
I believe one or more Galt were in 1959 class...but not sure...
Keep those circulars coming...am sure we all get a kick out of them!

Hi Laz,
Ronald Charles is the Chinese boy with glasses standing 4th from the left in the 2nd photo of the 1959 graduating class. He is the 3rd boy on the left of the priest in the 1st 1959 graduating class photo. Again the “unknown" is Harry Guildner, he is the partially hidden boy with glasses standing to the right of the priest. He does not appear in the 2nd photo. Swami (or Ronald Galt) was in the 1960 graduating class with his brother Richard "Turtleback" whose is shown in the volleyball picture in circular #47 (it looks a lot like him at about 14-15 years of age)..
Like you, I remember my class and a lot of the guys from 1958 and 1960 but after that? Memory fades over 1/2 century but my good times at Mount and the bad ones (especially, when I was whipped by "BoBo" in front off the whole school) are cherished memories. I was really saddened to hear what happened to Mount. It is an ignoble end to such a great school. It gave us a wonderful education, built our characters through sports and discipline and saw us through our formative years.
I'll be in touch

Caracas, 11 of October 2002.

Dear Christopher ,
I am sorry for the email address, I was just replying on your last email. The multiple emails mentioned never arrived so I answered your last one of two. Well, I hope this is correct. I have it clear now, thank you.
I shall modify the listing including the name of Ronald Charles and deleting Chin. That does not help me with the unknown or where ever Ronald Charles appears in the photo.
Also if you dinned with Swami then maybe he was your classmate also, and he was repeating Form V when I graduated?????
I know that to reconstruct 40 years is difficult but once I get Ronald Charles and Ronald Gokool things will be easier and we can get the website straightened out.
You would not believe it but those of the 1960s and 1970s do not know who their classmates were. We are lucky as our memories are better???? or our we were closer as a group in our times.
I must confess that I remember my class 1960 but not so well the other classes.
God Bless
Ladislao

In the meantime, could you please change my E-MAIL address to "vze263ga@verizon.net". This is my home e-mail. You are currently sending it to my work and my company would prefer restricting that to business (unless you always want to type "XXXPERS" in the subject area). Thank you.
The "mystery person" in the class of '59 photo, I believe, is Harry Guildner. He was Venezuelan and lived in Tigrito, Edo. Anzoategui. The priest, if I recall well, is Father Augustine.
Will contact you later

Hi Ladislao,
Good to hear from you...though I must admit I remember you only dimly...as one of us Magyars at Mount.
I'll email some more to the website address...and will definitely send for the CD...though where to send for it wasn't clear from the email.
Nice photos of you and your family...you've done well!
I've also forwarded the email to my brother Christopher (Kristof), whom you may remember from Mount...I think he was only a year ahead of you. He has some photos he promises to share.
I too got an EE degree...but have never used it...been a software engineer all my life.
If you need help maintaining the web site, you can contact me...I know something about that...for example, it would be better if all photos were thumbnails one could zoom in on...and the bios should be available when clicking on a name...none of us knows ALL the former Mount boys, so it would be nice to be able to pick-and-choose the photos and bios one is interested in...just a suggestion.
Don't take this criticism too harshly...the site is fine!
Greetings and hello to any old boys you run across (Fedaks, Farchegs, Figuera, etc.)...
BTW, I live in Santa Cruz, CA...about 100 Km South of San Francisco...

Hello Laszlo,
I'm willing to take over the Web page...provided that all the costs don't fall on me...
I spoke with Anthony Johnson about 1/1.5 years ago...around the time I started getting your circulars...which, by the way, are tremendously appreciated... Anyhow, we spoke and I suggested various ways in which to pages could be improved, and I offered to help make some of those changes. He agreed but never got back to me. I sent email and got no reply, so that was that...
I'm a professional computer programmer and although not a Webmaster, I have created many pages and am comfortable with scripting languages, HTML, etc.
The first thing would be to get the files from the current site. We will need Anthony's OK for this...
Then we need to find a good Web host site...and pay for it...unless we can use a site already "owned" by an old Mount boy...
Thanks for all your good work...my brother Christopher also appreciates it...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So another Circular,

God Bless

Circular No 106

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I. Caracas, 15 of November 2003. Circular No. 106
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

These few weeks we had Bro. Rupert visiting Venezuela. I managed to talk with him through telephone for a few minutes. The Circular wanted to meet him personally for a report but, no luck, he left this week. So I am sorry to inform you that there is nothing to report on Bro. Ruperts visit.

To fill in the space that I had reserved for the report I am including an old material that I have been keeping and I am sure that Cheche must have forgotten that he wrote it!!!.

The following lines came from Rafael Echeveria:

Norman Smith and myself, together with my brother Gustavo and a Venezuelan friend Enrique Gomez formed a rock band in Mount (it was The Beatle's era) ... the band was called "Chains". There was also another band called "The Interpreters" with which I played for some time. I played the bass-guitar as a matter of fact I still do.
I combine my professional practice as a lawyer (International Contracting Law in Oil Industry) with music and running. I have already ran the New York Marathon TWICE ... the last time in November 2000... can you believe it ? ...
Now I have five children (My second granddaughter is due April 18th). Claudia my eldest daughter (the married one) and my son Rafael live in Florida.
I have been a lawyer for 27 years now ... and I have met so many people around the world thanks to my professional practice. And I have lived a wonderful life!!!
I have a beautiful wife and five great kids...
My profession has reached very satisfactory levels and I feel proud of my work in life ... now ... at 54 !!! ... I am now getting ready for some big business opportunities ... it is time to meet your old friends!!! ... they can be your best partners !!!! Ladislao !!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Saludos & Blessings !!!!!

I am preparing the possibility of making a Report of the groups of Mount Boys of 1964-65... when we began in Mount... I have a spectacular photo! ... pity that I am not in it... but is very good... I request to you resend your telephone numbers and remembers what I asked for you of Circulars 1 to the 10 and the 12 (I have the 11). I am making a recompilation that is being best and do not want to lose anything. When it finishes this Historical Compilation (that really is a chronological relation of events taken from YOUR Reports) I will send it to you COMPLETE... a true historical testimony!
I take advantage of the opportunity for wish to you and yours Happy Passovers de Resurrection!

Circular No 105

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I. Caracas, 8 of November 2003. No. 105
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

This Circular has the first full account of what occurred at the REUNION, thanks to our “Doctor is in”, in Trinidad.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: "David E. Bratt MD"
Date: 10 Oct 11:19 (PDT)

First Abbey School REUNION 2003/08/30

At the end, the Master of Ceremonies, Martin Laurence, (class of 1981), who did a magnificent job of presenting speakers and smoothing out the gaps, said it best, "The building may have closed, but we live on."

So we finally met up, on a Saturday night, the 15th of August 2004, at the Centre of Excellence in Tunapuna, a place where so many of us used to hungrily look down upon, on similar Saturday nights, before cinema with Fr. Augustine. And I don't even know if those shows were continuing in 1985, but there we were in Tunapuna liming and old-talking as usual.

Next year I'll find out.

Fr. Augustine was not present, his hearing and eyesight not being of the best at present, but Abbott Francis Alleyne, Brother Camillus Culley, the honey man; Br. Gerard Alexis, once known as Br.Rupert, as urbane and smooth as ever; Fr. Cuthbert van de Sende; Fr. Benedict Simons, of Sputnik fame, Fr. Odo van der Heijdt; Fr. Christopher Theunissen and Br. Marius Williams, well represented the monks. In addition, Miss Kitty Marcus, the school secretary whose chemistry classes we all remember with delight if not success (I failed chemistry miserably) graced us with her presence. As a matter of fact there were a number of ladies present, most of whom I did not remember from Mount, but obviously some of us have improved ourselves. Perhaps the happiest couple there was the hardworking treasurer of the Organising Committee, Aaron Chin Albert (1984) and his wife who were celebrating their 11th anniversary.

Other members of the Organising Committee were Miguel Gonzalez (1985), who came all the way from California where he now lives, through Arima (mom) and Maracaibo (Dad) and who was described as the “chief organizer by everyone; Robert O’Connell (1982), President of the committee and who promised to take off his tie but never did; Avalon Kallo (1985), a key man, responsible for coordinating the bar; Gavin Gonsales (1983), another key man, the executive chef; Kerry Costello, (1983), instrumental in contacting many of the old boys who came; Leonard Abbot (1985), part time committee secretary and who I mixed up all night with Fr. Abbott (and I got more mixed up as the night wore on); Paul Guillen (1985); and Reza Haditsingh, who like a good Trini confused everyone thoroughly at the end by trying to give directions to his ranch for the family get-together the next day. He should have asked his wife.

By the way, the Sunday function at Reza was so good it ended at 2 AM on Monday. Now we know why so many banks opened late that Monday.

The room was tastefully decorated; wives again! The food was tasty and filling; wives again! The drinks were plenty and varied; Mount boys again!

A couple of people spoke. Christopher de Marothy (1958?) did so on behalf of the 50’s. He had to, he was the only one from that decade, and he led off magnificently, setting the tone for the rest of the speakers. Next year we hope to see more of you “real old boys” and hear some good old talk about how Mount was better back then.

David Bratt (1962) was allowed to speak for the sixties after fighting off Don and Gordon Mitchell (?1963 & ?1964), Dion Fakoory (?1965)and Salvador Coscaret (1969?), who all probably could have done a better job. Salvador incidentally was only the second “panol” representative at the reunion, Miguel Gonzalez being the other, and he came from Louisiana for the meeting. Thanks, fellows!

“Drax” or Joe Berment spoke movingly about life at the Mount in the 70’s and Clinton Ross, who now runs the lab at the General Hospital in Scarborough, (somebody knows chemistry!) spoke up for the scouts. He was well prepared.

Then, the last principal, Fr. Cuthbert made us all laugh with some unassuming but pointed jokes about life at Mount. “Cuttie” as we all fondly know him, was leaving for Holland the next day. He better come back. For someone who claims to have never been too interested in the Abbey School, he certainly has spent a lot of time with us. And the man makes a mean yogurt!

Abbott Francis, who I was told, was the best scout Mount ever had, closed off the formal part of the evening and it was interesting to hear him say that the main reason why the Abbey School had to shut down was because there was no longer any need for a quality academic school like Mount in T & T, and the decision was taken to put scarce resources into St. Bede’s Vocational School. For our own personal reasons, some of us would want to disagree with the idea that another quality school is not needed, but there is no denying that St. Bede’s School is needed in the country.

The St. Benedict community of monks has contracted over the years. There are now nly 10 monks up there and half are over 70 years of age. Abbot Francis also pointed out that 2003 was the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Abbey School in 1943. Is anyone from that era around? (Richard O´Connor living in ustralia, entered the school in 1945)

The evening ended with a slide show of pictures of Mount old boys. It was not complete by any means but should form the basis of a really good album by next year.

Personally I want to thank the 1985 class, the last Abbey School class, for organizing this much needed reunion. As the last class, it was really their duty to do and they did it with much brio. Strange how things work out, Ladislao with his weekly Mount letters and now the Mount reunions. Maybe we are growing up at last.

Circular No 104

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 2 of November 2003. No. 104
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

When I wrote the date, I was dismayed, just two more months and the year is no more.
I just wonder how you can bear reading my boring stories, after exactly two years from the start.
I can only hope that you would like me to go on, if so, send me a short note, just to let me know your impressions.
Now, why I am writing this? it is because some of you have given up writing and I cannot check your feeling on the matter. So, R:S:V:P:

This Circular although late it is to celebrate another anniversary, dear to us.
During the second week of October, the Abbey of Mount St. Benedict was 91 years old. I have made the estimation using the Golden Jubilee brochure dated 1962.
There was no announcement, or celebration notice from the Abbey.

I am enclosing a photo of the clergy that was present for the photo in 1962. This picture was taken in the auditorium of the Monastery.

I would like you to place names on the faces, please help, the result is going to be published in Circular No. 114, so there is ample of time but the sooner you write the sooner I can give you results.

More news about Fr. Paul.

Date: 26 Oct 18:40 (PST)

Dear Ladislao,
I read the circulars while in Hamburg. Many thanks for the information therein.
I saw the address of Fr.Francis whom I wrote, Fr. Francis was very happy to learn of my election as a Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS ) and sent a copy of my e-mail in which I referred to Fr. Paul as an excellent Maths teacher.
The letter was read to him before he died, may his soul rest in peace.
Fr.Francis tells me Fr. Paul was comforted to learn that a past student of the Abbey School is a judge of the Tribunal.
Fr. Anton a very kind Jesuit priest who lives in the same house got details of ITLOS and of me on the web at www.itlos.org and told Fr. Francis.
Subsequently I received a reply with the sad news that Fr.Paul had died.
I read news of his death in the T&T Catholic News on my return home yesterday.
Continue the good work.
Sincerely,
Anthony Lucky.

Dear Ladislao,
We received the sad news of the passing of Fr. Paul van den Eijnden in his native Holland on October the 13th.
The funeral will take place on Saturday, 18th October, after which according to his last wishes his mortal remains will be cremated.
Fr. Paul had been battling cancer of the kidneys for a number of years and was getting increasingly weaker.
In the end he was longing to die and return to his Lord.
God bless and every good wish.
Fr. Christopher.
