April 26, 2003.

To all former members of MSBC

We, The Abbey Boys Committee will like to announce the 1º School Reunion.
As most of you have already heard the reunion will be a two-day event held in TRINIDAD ON FRIDAY 15TH AND SUNDAY 17TH OF AUGUST 2003.

Friday the 15th will be our dinner and dance event held at the Centre of Excellence in Trinidad at 7pm., this will be a formal function where by most of then old boys, teachers and other staff members would be meeting for the first time since the school closed in July 1985 or since they graduated. We will have a mini show presented by past students giving speeches, jokes of the past to juggle our memories or just some good "ol talk" as Trinis will say, we may even have some surprises. We invite anyone of you that would like to give a short speech to contact us in advance. So let us all get together to celebrate this Grand Reunion!

Sunday the 17th will be a family/Sports day held at the sports facility grounds up at Mount (just like the good old days) at 12 noon. At this function, we will have activities for everyone to participate both young and old. We will also have football games so that you can show how good you are or use to be. So don't forget your sport gear.
It will be a "bring your cooler" event but we will supply the all the food.

Tickets are $450.00 TT per person. This price includes food and beverages for the dinner & dance and food for the second day. All US and Canada residents please pay the equivalent of US dollars 75.oo.

Racism not a Christian thing
September 20, 2000
A Catholic priest has sounded a warning to certain groups of people in Trinidad that they should be aware of the dangers of isolation which gives rise to racism and prejudice.

Father Michael De Verteuil, Rector of the Regional Seminary of St John Vianney and Uganda Martyr, pointed to the Syrian Lebanese community. He said while what the Syrian Lebanese people have brought to Trinidad and Tobago was admirable, they should be careful not to cut themselves off from society, giving rise to racial prejudice.

He said: “Some things I admire about a community like that. Their sense of community support, sense of belonging and identity is remarkable.” But De Verteuil also remarked that they have to be careful with the dangers of isolation and separation from the general society. He said: “They must be aware that racial prejudice is not present while trying to preserve their traditions and culture.

“They must not do that at the expense of looking down on other races,” he said. The 52 year-old priest recognises that the Syrian Lebanese women have made strides in their attempt to be part of society and make valuable contributions. He drew reference to recent charity work by the women and cultural programmes they have hosted in the past.

He said: “I won't question or doubt their motives as they have done very good things.” He also admitted that he was hesitant to speak about the Syrian /Lebanese community because he did not know enough about their cultural practices.

Fr De Verteuil said this applied to any race in which members seek to cut themselves off from society at large as a result of trying to preserve the race. He said the Roman Catholic Church does not tolerate any type of prejudice, especially racial. “It is simply not a Christian thing to do.”

He said in the perfect Christian life there would be no racism, but the reality is far from the ideal. “God had no favourites and we should not. If he chose the Israelites it is because he could not find a weaker people. They were chosen as servants and not to be arrogant. From time to time the issue of race crops up in the church with congregation members, the Mt St Benedict priest admitted.

He remembers one case that turned out to be a bitter feud which still has not been resolved after many years. “It was an African guy and Indian girl. The parents tried to stop the marriage and they still went ahead and got married. They are happy in the relationship, but her family has stood their ground and will not have anything to do with the couple,” he said. The man's family did not have a problem with the union.

De Verteuil firmly believes that the public's general acceptance of mixed marriages is even greater today. “I have seen other attempts to stop relationships in the early stages before the idea of marriage comes up. But once it gets to stage of marriage, families tend to accept it more easily.”

He also disclosed that his own brother married an Indian woman and there were never any objections from either family. “My sister-in-law is a much loved member of the family.” He applauded the racial tolerance in this country, referring to the horrors of ethnic cleansing in other places like Bosnia and Rwanda.

He genuinely believes that the level of racial tolerance in this country is outstanding. “As Christians we cannot be a part of what is happening in Rwanda and Bosnia and Ireland.” “We have to look in our hearts and root out any form of prejudice, we need to rid ourselves of that. There cannot be a division,” he said.

Hello Maroth,
I am an old school-friend of Ladislao's. I was at Mount for the period 1958-1964.
I have been corresponding with Ladislao about the need for us to do something to get the site updated. I have also many months ago been corresponding with Tony Johnson, but he has not replied to my many recent emails. [I suspect he has tagged all Mount correspondents "Block sender" so that he does not even know when he receives a message from one of us.] My knowledge of web sites is very limited. I can access them and read them, and I have a person who helps me with my own website, but I have never learned anything about constructing or maintaining websites myself. I have indicated to Ladislao that I am willing to contribute to the cost. Ladislao has now sent me a copy of your message below and asked me to contact you and to discuss with you what we can do to carry the site forward. What can I do to help? What do you suggest?
Don

Hello Laszlo,
I'm willing to take over the Web page...provided that all the costs don't fall on me...
I spoke with Anthony Johnson about 1/1.5 years ago...around the time I started getting your circulars...which, by the way, are tremendously appreciated...
Anyhow, we spoke and I suggested various ways in which to pages could be improved, and I offered to help make some of those changes. He agreed but never got back to me. I sent email and got no reply, so that was that...
I'm a professional computer programmer and although not a Webmaster, I have created many pages and am comfortable with scripting languages, HTML, etc. The first thing would be to get the files from the current site. We will need Anthony's OK for this... Then we need to find a good Web host site...and pay for it...unless we can use a site already "owned" by an old Mount
boy...
Thanks for all your good work...my brother Christopher also appreciates it...

Dear Don,
You must have received the email from Marothy. I would like you to be the CEO on this, if you can! You have made contacts with a provider, Salvador has ideas. Write him! His English is good, but his Spanish is better. And Marothy even discussed the matter with Gabby. I only need information for the Circular on the effort being made to get the WEB page going. I unfortunately know little in HTML and web page programming. The exchanges that have to be made can be a good article, so keep me
informed. I would think that you can play a good role as a moderator; I have read some of the resumes of the cases that you have judged. Can you send me a copy of the cases that are open for the public to read? I enjoy reading the reasoning used. If you can keep me informed on the outcome of the negotiations these would be appreciated (back to the MOUNT INSIDE days, Editor!)
God Bless
Ladislao

Hi Ladislao,
I am humbled that you think I can do much with the web site, beside be an agitator for improvement. I have no personal web-page experience. What I suggest is that I approach the various persons you have mentioned as gently as possible, with the intention of trying to make progress. I understand that you do not wish to be copied with all the correspondence, but only wish to receive reports from time to time on how matters are progressing. I shall as you request have a go, and let you know from time to time if I have any luck.

Hi Don,
Nice to hear from you. I was at Mount from 1952-1958, my brother Christopher from 1952 to 1959.
The first step, I think, is for me to find a good and inexpensive host. I'll pursue this shortly. The second step is to somehow get the rights to "theabbeyschool.com" name. I suspect Anthony owns this. If we can't get hold of him, we will need a new name
for the site. Once this is done, the photos, files, etc. on the current Web site must be copied over. We might be able to do this right now, unless there are copyright implications.
Will get back to you soon...
