Circular No 103

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 26 of October 2003. Circular No. 103
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Here is the Eulogy for Fr. Bernard as it appeared in the farewell card that we
received:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Father Bernard Vlaar
1915 – 1991
Monk of the Mount St. Benedict Abbey Trinidad

Born in Hoorn, Holland, on 24th May, 1915, he received the names, Timothy Peter, at baptism.
After being turned down by the Mill Hill Fathers, with whom he studied for a few years, because of frail health, he entered the Benedictine monastery in Trinidad, in 1937, determined now to be a missionary monk.
Monastic Profession followed on 8th September, 1938, and the ordination to the priesthood on 19th March, 1942.
In the following year he was appointed first Rector of the Minor Seminary and first Headmaster of the conjoined boarding-school.
In 1949, he was reading for a science Degree at Oxford and resumed the Headmastership two years after his return in 1951.
In 1972 he was appointed Prior-Administrator and, in 1975, Abbot.
He resigned in 1979, after suffering a cerebral stroke.
In 1981, while on a visit to Holland, he sustained severe hot-water burns while bathing, that left him crippled.
In September, 1991, he fractured his leg after falling down from his wheel-chair.
Further complications set in and he passed peacefully to the Lord in the Caura Chest Hospital, where efforts were made to deal with his pleurisy, on the morning of Sunday, 27th October.
After well-attended funeral Mass on Tuesday 29th, his body was laid to rest in the Abbey cemetery.
Father Bernard was a humble and lovable man filled with the Spirit of the Lord.
The spirituality of the Charismatic Renewal, which he served as its Spiritual Director, swayed and transformed his life of faith and prepared him for these twelve years of physical confirmed which he endured prayerfully with heroic patience.
---------------------------------------------------
The circular is inviting those that have a golden pen for a short resume on Fr. Bernard´s life, to write and let others know, how life was influenced by our beloved headmaster, and to set an example…..

But in case you wonder how my life was under Fr. Bernard, here is a very short episode that I wanted you to have.

I remember him as the HEADMASTER and I was always afraid to be called by him, as it was a sign that you did something wrong. But of course this was not so but it was in the air.
The first time I was called in to his office was on Sunday, right after the study period at 10 am, the study period where you were supposed to write letters to your family and friends.
Naturally the first step was to scan my brains of my last few hours movement, to check of any deviation of the rules, just in case I had to make up an excuse.
I knocked on the door of his office and was ushered in, I cannot express the felling that I had upon crossing the threshold but the feeling was there, maybe because of the multiple rumours and the general fear that his call generated and the sight of the CANE propped in one corner.
I was told to sit down in the straight back chair in front of his desk, and I was ready for the dress down or the unknown.
With my eyes and ears tuned, I was suddenly aware that the situation was not a reprisal or punishment. He asked me about the address on a letter that I had just written to my aunt in Hungary, the letter did not have a Mr, Miss, before the name as was customary, so I was asked kindly, for whom the letter was addressed; male, female or the way the Magyars were accustomed to address a person. Once I gave him the right answer I was relieved how easy was it all. But no matter, until I again crossed the threshold of the door, I did not feel easy.
Outside my friends were waiting to find out how I did or what I did. Or maybe to hear my cries!!!!
I know that this does not say a lot about Fr. Bernard but I can tell you that he was respected to a great extent, at least by us the younger generation, I was 13 at that time and in Form I in 1956.
I regret that I never had a closer friendship with him during my five years at the school, but somehow he represented an authority that was not to be joked about.
In a later issue I shall recount another episode that might help to gauge the appreciation and general , that I have had and still remember of this great teacher and HEADMEASTER.
---------------------------------------------------
Now another bad news, but this one recent, year 2003, for those that knew him and had him as a teacher.

Dear Ladislao,

We received the sad news of the passing of Fr. Paul van den Eijnden in his native Holland on October the 13th.
The funeral will take place on Saturday, 18th October, after which according to his last wishes his mortal remains will be cremated.
Paul had been battling cancer of the kidneys for a number of years and was getting increasingly weaker.
In the end he was longing to die and return to his Lord.
God bless and every good wish.
Fr. Christopher.
----------------------------------------------------
I am sure that there is another story to be told on Fr. Paul’s chess abilities.

I’m afraid I missed it.
My family is moving to London soon and I am just too swamped.
I had to work in Chaguanas all day Sunday at a photo shoot that never ended until late.
I do receive the circulars and start reading all of them, even if time doesn't permit me to finish the ones that don't seem relevant to me after a bit. You’re doing a good job, though. I spoke with my old classmate, Joe Berment, who told me he was going. I regret missing it; but work and travel preparations are eating up all my time.

Circular No 102

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 18 of October 2003. Circular No. 102
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Now a splendid article by another Queen´s Scout, the first one was by Nigel Boos, and it appeared in Circular No. 71
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: "Isaias Farcheg"
Date: Sat, 4 Oct 2003 23:44:11 -0400

My dear good friend Ladislao AND OF COURSE MY OLD GOOD FRIENDS OF PAST YEARS...
You have been asking me to write you my experience as a Scout, precisely as a leader of the Tucans patrol, and also with the merit that I made it as a Queen Scout.
I have to confess after some many years, that in order to acquire this Badge, I had to cheat in my swimming test, since I have always been a very bad swimmer. I still recall that the last test was carried out in the American Base during one of our camping experiences. We were made to carry out about 4 different swimming tests, and for me it was exhausting, since I did not have the perfect coordination between legs and arm, in summary I was a mess swimming, and really made to the finish line by cheating.
My brother Elias, and a few like you and the Fedaks were not Scouts, and I really believe that you all missed a lot.
With Scouting one was able to make plan on the week ends and participate with the different marching parades that we had to assist, and that was a way to show off in front of the girls down in Port of Spain.
The camping days were wonderful, and what made me start this recalling of the memory, was a camping we had in the American Base in 1956. Each Patrol was given a chicken or a duck to cook on a specific day, which Father Ildefonse, our troop leader, assigned. I remember that Roberto Lipavsky belonged to Woodpeckers patrol. We were taught a trick that made the pieces of chicken to be a little brownish, this was to put a slight amount of sugar while frying it. On the day Roberto had to prepare his chicken, he started adding a little tea spoon of sugar, while the piece of the chicken was put to fry. Roberto was not patient enough, and he saw that there was not change in the colour in the pieces of chicken, so his occurrence was to keep adding still more little tea spoons of sugar, and of course, after a few minutes, that seemed like hours, what he ended up in cooking was a sugar syrup with fried pieces of chicken.
Fr. Ildefonse went from patrol to patrol testing the food and of course making notes, which accounted for the final marks in the competition of the best Patrol in the Camp.
We had wonderful ideas in order to keep up with the time that we were allowed during the day. Thus we had to plan the hours dedicated for cooking. One trick we practiced with regards to cooking the potatoes, was that we dug a hole, put the potatoes in, and above it we started the fire, so that the heat of the fire prepared the potatoes at the same time we were cooking with it the chicken, the heat was cooking in a indirect way, our buried potatoes.
We had to make good plans in the handling of the cans of food we were given, and also every one had to participate in the kitchen section.
The initial day was very interesting, because, we had to choose the ground where to settle the tent. In the rainy period we had to be aware of the water drainage, so that we had to be engineers in a way.
Discipline, handling of the time, handling of the food, was the way of getting a lot of points in the competition. We also had to handle the different competition according to the scouting book of Baden Powell (did you all know who was the founder?)
I am sure Lipavsky he still remembers how it was to be a Scouts, to be a troop leader, as did our pledge with the flag and Our Queen.
I took the opportunity of reviewing and recalling with the help of internet, the essence of Scout, and I do believe that we need in the younger generation is the bringing back a lot of the virtues or values, of which humanity as a whole have forgotten...to trustworthy, to be loyal, to be a sincere friend, to be helpful, courteous, kind and obedient, cheerful, thrifty ( ahorrativo para lo que se olvidaron del ingles fino, atencion Lipavsky, quien siempre fue el mejor), brave, clean and reverent.
Scouting still goes on in the world, and I regret I did not have the time to have gotten my children in the Scouting movement here in Venezuela.

LADISLAO, LET ME IN THE FUTURE WRITE A NEW REMEMBERANCE OF THE OLD
DAYS...REMEMBER THAT WE WHO LEFT SCHOOL SINCE 1958, HAVE TO WRITE SLOWLY AND
SURELY, IN ORDER THAT THE CRITICAL ONES AND WHO ARE GOOD IN ENGLISH WILL NOT
CRITICIZE US ( I AM REFERRING TO MANUEL PRADA AND LIPAVSKY).

On My Honour, I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and to the Queen,
To help other people
And to keep the Scout Law

Scout Law is:
A Scout is to be trusted.
A Scout is loyal.
A Scout is friendly and considerate. (Helpful)
A Scout belongs to the worldwide family of Scouts. (Friendly).
A Scout has courage in all difficulties.
A Scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property.
A Scout has self-respect and respect for others.

The Scout Motto is:
Be Prepared

A Scout is Trustworthy.
A Scout tells the truth. He is honest, and he keeps his promises. People can depend on him.
A Scout is Loyal.
A Scout is true to his family, friends, Scout leaders, school, and nation.
A Scout is Helpful.
A Scout cares about other people. He willingly volunteers to help others without expecting payment or reward.
A Scout is Friendly.
A Scout is a friend to all. He is a brother to other Scouts. He offers his friendship to people of all races and nations, and respects them even if their beliefs and customs are different from his own.
A Scout is Courteous.
A Scout is polite to everyone regardless of age or position. He knows that using good manners makes it easier for people to get along.
A Scout is Kind.
A Scout knows there is strength in being gentle. He treats others as he wants to be treated. Without good reason, he does not harm or kill any living thing.
A Scout is Obedient.
A Scout follows the rules of his family, school, and troop. He obeys the laws of his community and country. If he thinks these rules and laws are unfair, he tries to have them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobeying them.
A Scout is Cheerful.
A Scout looks for the bright side of life. He cheerfully does tasks that come his way. He tries to make others happy.
A Scout is Thrifty.
A Scout works to pay his own way and to help others. He saves for the future. He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property.
A Scout is Brave.
A Scout can face danger although he is afraid. He has the courage to stand for what he thinks is right even if others laugh at him or threaten him.
A Scout is Clean.
A Scout keeps his body and mind fit and clean. He chooses the company of those who live by high standards. He helps keep his home and community clean.
A Scout is Reverent.
A Scout is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties. He respects the beliefs of others.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have two comments, for now we know of two Queen´s Scout patrol leaders, that have mustered enough strength to write on Scouting, and that Isaias has used up all of the space available in the Circular, so until next week.
I am sure that through the years, there were others patrol “ “, but we cannot be sure until we hear from them.
Can anyone of the Scouts, remember the scene that is depicted in the photos that I have included in this Circular???

God Bless
Ladislao

Dear Friends,

Sorry friends, no resume is available as of today. Close to two months has passed and there is no resume from the organizer committee.
No list is available to indicate the names of those that paid the requested advance payment for the EVENT; or a final names list in case there was a balance sheet, I hope the event did not produce loss.
I have mentioned the above as it should be interesting to know the final results, for use in next year´s event.

Dear Ladislao,
This is just a very brief note to let you know that I could not have attended the reunion because I was on my way to Hamburg, Germany, where I am currently sitting as one of the judges of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). I was elected to this Tribunal on 2 September 2003 at the United Nations in New York.
If you wish you can find information about ITLOS on the web at www.itlos.org

Dear Ladislao,
I have said this before and I write it once more "you have done and continue to do an excellent job”. I cannot allow the year to pass before wishing you and your family best wishes for the season and a very happy and prosperous new year.
Next year, in February, the Country will be electing a new President. It may seem unbelievable but the name of a past student of the Abbey school is among those mentioned as one of the possibles. We pray that the new President will possess the spiritual and moral values, honesty and integrity.
Sincerely,
Anthony Lucky.

In response to Urbano´s Fedak recently found letter in my last issue, here is the reply of the outcome of the football game by Isaias Farcheg

From: "Isaias Farcheg"
Subject: Re: The last games:
Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 21:25:16 -0400

That game, of course was won by us...only watch who was the Centre Foward...that day I recall, like if it was yesterday, I scored 3 goals, and the 4th goal was a pass I made to Terry Viera, who did a last minute dribble and scored the 4th Goal.
I was made a hero that day. And I have ever since recalled the game in my memories like if I had preceded Pele for many years. Later on I came to know that Pele was born on the 17th of October 1940 and I was born on the 15th of October of the same year. That implies that I was already scoring goals before Pele was made known to the world, and I had to be made known to the Medical Profession.
You all are lucky guys, because if I had become famous as Pele was, I would have bothered with any one of you all, and all of you, would have to be jalando bola, for me to pay attention to you all.
Now you all know the end of the last game.
And thanks God that> did well at goal keeping.
By the way now you all know why I am able to sleep with a smile every night, because I sleep remembering how good I was as a Center Foward.
Greetings
Isaias.

Dear Friends,
Now sing together “Happy centennial anniversary to you, (repeat twice) happy birthday to you CIRCULAR, etc.”
Who would believe it, I did not, until I noticed that there were three digits, but I must catch up to the voluminous job by Wayne Vincent Brown, and not least by “Mr. The Doctor is In”, David Bratt.
So I continue with our unfailing, Don Mitchell, who together with Salvador Coscarart have sent the only photos that I have on the event.

Date: 31 Aug 14:51 (PDT)

Hi Ladislao,
The reason there are no names is that I am no good with names. I forget a name within a microsecond of being told it. However, for the "Head Table" (it was not the head table; that was just my jokey name; there was no head table) they are, from left to right: David Bratt, Br. Camilus of Pax Honey and the bakery, Don, Fr Benedict, Fr Christopher, D'Ornellas, Mrs D'Ornellas. We were looking at some of the old photos that Fr Benedict had brought with him. A better name for that photo would be "Examining Fr Benedict's photos" or something like that.

Dear Don,
I am glad for all the photos, but need names, those that you remember.
I sent Margaret the list of photos I received today; can you place names on the faces?
This one you sent was called head table.
I need the photos on the table!!!! (those shown on the photo)
I hope that the object of discussion, and in hand, was it not the Circulars????

Hello Ladislao,
Here I am back in Antigua. The trip to Trinidad is not past, and I must get back to work. But, I would like to send you some of the photographs I took. My computer broke down, and is being repaired. I am borrowing Maggie's at the present. I have downloaded the photos to it, and will attach them one by one to email messages that I shall send to you. I am very bad with names, so please excuse the lack of information. The first one I call "The Head Table."
The old boys of the 1985 class who organised the function treated us all very hospitably. I thoroughly enjoyed the event, and hope that more of us will make it next year. They have promised to make it an annual event.
The monks and Ms Markus attended the Friday event. I attach several photos of them. It was so nostalgic to see them again. Only Fr Abbot was able to make it to the Sunday lunch in the Maraval Valley.
The photos of the men and women in formal dress were taken at the dinner on the Friday night. The ones of us dressed less formally were taken on the Sunday at the home of Mr Hardip-Singh, where we enjoyed viewing the wide array of wild animals surrounding the house.
Very few of the old boys from our generation were present. You will recognise the ones who are in the photos.
All the best,
Don

Hi Ladislao,
I am still borrowing Maggie's computer. I hope to get mine back tomorrow.
No, I did not see Anthony Lucky. As you will realise from the photos, there were very few of the "very old" old boys present. That was only to be expected, given that the reunion was originally intended to be limited to the class of '85. I expect that there will be many more there for the reunion of 2004.
Now, we have to hope that Salvador will make progress with the web site. Either we get Tony to help, or, we simply start a new one. If only I had ever learned the slightest bit about creating a web site, I would be in there starting up a temporary replacement one immediately.
We have to hope that more of the photos from Fr Benedict's collection can be scanned, and eventually all of the surviving school records. We desperately need to have them on a site for those who are interested to view and down load.

Ladislao.
I would say this is the last souvenir I have from Mount, let it circulate.
I am sure Farcheg is having a big laugh while reading.
How where the scores who could remember ???
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So another week, but this time I am sending out the Circular on time.
Still awaiting information from the 1) Event’s committee, 2) Fr. Christopher, 3) Leonard Abbot, 4) David Bratt, 5) Charitable soul.
From this last appeal you can judge that even with the latest communication methods, if fingers do not type and email are not sent out, the best of wishes are not enough.
I must insist because I do not want the organizer think that we were not diligent and persuasive enough.
God Bless
Ladislao
